What
is hyperbole? Hyperbole is a figurative language technique where exaggeration is used to create a
strong effect. With hyperbole, the notion of the speaker is greatly
exaggerated to emphasize the point. The word “hyperbole” is actually
composed of two root words: “hyper” which means “over,” and “bole” which means
“to throw.” So, etymologically, “hyperbole” translates roughly to “over throw”
or “to throw over.” True to its origins, hyperbole or language that is
hyperbolic overstates a point or goes a bit too far.
There are some reasons why people use hyperbole,
namely :
1. To get things funny. Example : My sister use make-up
on her face, she looks like a clown.
2.
To makes description or makes qualities of people or things stand out by
exaggerating them. Example : She is perfect in every way; Your dad is the smartest
guy in the world.
3.
To describe a person’s emotions (feelings). Example : I felt there was a
big stone hit me.
4.
It used for emphasis (makes
that part more important). Example : I’ve asked you not to do that a thousand
times.
5.
Can used in Literal (poetry).
Hyperbole sometimes makes use simile or metaphor to create the effect of exaggeration, such
as “He’s as strong as an ox”.
