SYNONYM, ANTONYM, AND HYPONYM

A.    Synonym

What is synonym? Synonym is words that share meanings with other words. There are many reasons why synonyms are great namely:

1.       They make it possible for writers to create a mood with the nuances of their vocabularies.

2.       They give writers more rhythmic tools.

3.       They sound fancy.

Example :

-          Intelligent = clever = brilliant = knowledgeable

-          Incredible = super = wonderful = fantastic

-          House = dwelling = abode = domicile

B.     Antonym

What is antonym? Antonyms are words that mean the opposite of other words. Mis, dis, mal, in, and un are affixes that can create antonym.

Example :

-          Arrogant >< Humble

-          Complex >< Simple

-          Visible >< Invisible

C.     Hyponym

What is hyponym? Hyponym is a specific term used to designate a member of a broader class.

Example :

-          Daisy and rose are hyponyms of flower.

-          Chair and table are hyponyms of furniture.

-          Red and green are hyponyms of color.
